Howell Hunt, owner of Equine Corral Farrier & Barn Supplies store in Lithia, likes to describe his life as being in middle age. “With another 50 years or so of living left to do, there’s a lot I’ve wanted to accomplish, so I’d better get started!” One goal the Hunts had is to develop a business that supports their family’s long-term passion for horses. After decades of riding, a daughter majoring in Equine Sciences, building a new home and stable in Lithia, and leaving the corporate world of IBM, that goal could now become a reality. With only 6 Farrier Stores in all of Florida, the need for a dedicated retail shop for the horseshoeing professional was immediately seen. As Hillsborough is the 2nd largest county in our state for horses and 1/3rd of the local farriers live in the Plant City area, The Crossroads Mall at Lithia was a logical choice for the store’s location. Equine Corral carries an extensive line of horseshoes and related products geared towards the professional shoer and horse owner. The store’s friendly atmosphere brings the equine enthusiast and their vet and farrier team together into an environment that is educational and supports the horse’s overall good health. Although most products are hoof related, 20% of the items are carried because Howell’s daughter said, “he had to”. They include Cow Bells, Vinyl Jumps, Water Tanks, Equimedic First Aid Kits and old farm license plates. Mr. Hunt is quick to point out that although he’s been involved with horses most of his life, he has never been trained in how to shoe and those discussions are better left for the professional. But what he promises to his customers is to provide them with opportunities to increase their technical knowledge, productivity and efficiency, and therefore make their businesses more profitable. Some ways in which this is being accomplished has been with the creation and distribution of a Farrier’s Resource Guide and hosting monthly Farrier Rap Sessions. Future plans include sponsoring technical clinics on founder and hoof care and a presentation series on Managing & Growing Your Business based on Doug Butler's best selling book "$ix Figure $hoeing".
